From Producing Cumbia to Building Community Development
by Sergio C. Muñoz, Special Feature for the US Hispanic Business Council (USHBC)
I have admired Javier Palomarez for over a decade. I invested completely in his leadership for our national community along with our mutual friend, Tayde Aburto.
In 2021, I started a series called On Prosperity based on an interview that I produced with Javier. In this interview, he told me:
"It is clear to me that the changing face of America is best illustrated by the Latino community. I think we are going to be transformational for this nation. However it’s up to us to change the narrative that has, for too long, described our community. And to make our interests known. As a community, we have not been able to articulate our needs.”
Over 60 interviews since that first one with Javier, I have come to understand the perspectives of so many of us from all different angles of life.
In Corpus Christi, Texas, lives Horacio “El Dusty” Oliveira, a 2x Grammy nominated music producer. In 2025, El Dusty has performed at SXSW, New Orleans Jazz Festival and local clubs in Houston, Austin and San Antonio plus at the HEB sponsored ArtWalk in Corpus Christi.
As a businessman with a growing real estate portfolio, he will begin later this year to turn Cumbia into Community Development in Miami, Florida; His first venture outside of Texas.
