‘It’s Been a Nightmare’: Small Businesses Struggle to Access Tariff Refunds

Entrepreneurs report login issues, long wait times, and verification delays as they try to claim refunds worth tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Javier Palomarez, Founder and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council, was recently featured in Inc. discussing the growing challenges small businesses face when attempting to access federal tariff refunds. As entrepreneurs across the country report delays, account verification issues, and barriers within the refund process, Palomarez emphasized the urgent need for stronger transparency measures to ensure relief reaches the businesses that ultimately absorbed these rising costs.

“Many small businesses ultimately paid these costs through higher invoices and passed-along tariffs,” said Palomarez. “Without stronger transparency rules, refunds could remain with intermediaries instead of reaching the businesses that absorbed the impact.”
